Billboard to Expand Internationally with Launch in China

billboardBillboard announced an expansion in China that will include branded media platforms in partnership with Vision Music Ltd., a Chinese entertainment, lifestyle, fashion, and sports media company.

Billboard will offer a collection of music content channels via multiple platforms, including print, online, and mobile. Billboard China will unveil its website in the upcoming weeks.

Entertainment One’s Peppa Pig Finds Success in China

Peppa Pig China Since its launch on-air in China last year, Entertainment One’s Peppa Pig has over 5.4 billion views on its three on demand platforms, IQIY, Youku and Tudou. It is also one of the most popular programs for pre-schoolers on state television broadcaster CCTV, where its repeat was the No. 1 animated show in its time slot.

King Features Partners for Digital Licensing

King Features Syndicate has partnered with Zynga, Scientific Gaming, and Dragonplay to bring its classic brands to digital platforms through social games, social media integrations, and other mobile apps.

Next year, Zoobe Messaging will debut animated 3-D Popeye avatars for mobile apps and messaging services. Fashion UK recently launched a Betty Boop-inspired dress-up game in the UK and the U.S., and Boluga will launch the Flash Gordon mobile game this fall in numerous markets and languages around the world. This summer, European Games Group launched Flash Gordon virtual goods, costumes, and accessories as in-game purchases in the Hero Zero MMO game, with offerings featuring The Phantom coming soon. In late 2015, Walkinglife Media will debut Popeye computer and mobile games in China.

In Japan, Dena has debuted virtual Betty Boop goods to be sold within its “mobage” social networking service. Web Marketing Japan will launch Popeye and Betty Boop smartphone decorations and smartphone application software for Facebook graphics, and Sammy Networks will launch Popeye and Olive Oyl mobile pachinko games. M-Up will utilize Betty Boop and Popeye for its delivery services for NTT DoCoMo customers, including vocal in-character inquiry responses, screen decorations, flash animation, and smartphone screen icons.

King Features has also partnered with Kuboo, a social networking site that brings safe and wholesome entertainment to kids, to create premium content for the site featuring Popeye and a new virtual world called Goon Island. Now in development, Goon Island will feature Popeye-themed games and virtual items such as clothing, furnishings, and decorations.

Angry Birds 2 Hits 30 Million Downloads Worldwide

Angry-Birds-2-logoA little less than two weeks since its worldwide release, Angry Birds 2, from Rovio Entertainment Ltd., has been downloaded 30 million times. According to Rovio, approximately one third of those downloads came from China.

KFC, Uglydoll Promotion to Launch in China

窗口萌萌哒-确认2The Uglydoll brand has secured a retail promotion partnership with KFC China through their Asia licensing agent Global Pursuit, that will see Uglydoll premiums distributed with kid’s meals at more than 4000 KFC restaurant locations throughout Mainland China. The KFC Uglydoll promotion is set to run through July.

The Uglydoll brand characters were first introduced in China in 2013 and have expanded to include a line of licensed apparel, accessories, as well as other products which support individualism.

The product line is available at retail establishments in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou as well as Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Additional product’s will be released by Global Pursuit and will include a line of t-shirts and games.

China Tops the 2015 A.T. Kearney Global Retail Development Index

A.T.KearneylogoA.T. Kearney China released a report on June 1, which ranked China as the top country in the Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) for the first time since 2010. China’s retail market is expected to grow to $8 trillion by 2022.

Published since 2001, the GRDI ranks the top 30 developing countries for retail investment worldwide. The Index analyzes 25 macroeconomic and retail-specific variables to help retailers devise successful global strategies to identify emerging market investment opportunities.

While Asia was an overall region winner, Latin America had three countries in the top 10 (Uruguay No. 2, Chile No. 3, and Brazil No. 8) proving it’s a strong region for retailers despite economic headwinds.

The 2015 GRDI includes a special feature on the prospects for luxury goods in developing markets. The feature includes an analysis of the 15 leading luxury brands and their presence in the GRDI’s top 30 countries. The analysis shows that emerging markets fall into three tiers of luxury development, with different implications for brands looking to enter or expand in these markets.
