Sesame Streets Unveils New Format, Segment, and Cast Member

Two new episodes of Sesame Street will debut on HBO starting at 9 a.m. on January 16.  Every Saturday thereafter, a new episode will air at 9 a.m. followed by a repeat episode at 9:30a.m. New episodes will also simultaneously debut on HBO Latino and be dubbed into Spanish. All episodes will now be 30-minute long allowing young viewers to engage with the TV series.

Families will also be able to watch new and past seasons of Sesame Street daily on HBO Family at 8 a.m., and five years of library episodes will be available for streaming on HBO Now and HBO Go. Episodes will also be available on HBO On Demand and affiliate portals.

Sesame Street content continues to be available to PBS Kids viewers on weekdays and Sundays on local stations, and on the PBS Kids video app. Season 46 episodes will begin airing on PBS Kids next fall.

Sesame Street’s well-known set, theme song, and show opening will have new updates and the show will open in the Sesame Street neighborhood. Cookie Monster will have an all-new segment, “Smart Cookies,” where he’ll continue to work on his self-regulation skills. The show will introduce Nina, a young, bilingual, Hispanic woman, who uses her wit, compassion, and charisma to help the furry residents of Sesame Street solve their daily dilemmas.

Sesame Street to Start Airing First on HBO

As reported by news outlets including The New York Times, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit group behind the children’s television program, Sesame Street, has struck a deal with HBO that will bring the show’s next five seasons to the premium cable network and its streaming outlets beginning this fall.

The partnership will allow Sesame Workshop to significantly increase its production of Sesame Street and other new programming. It will produce 35 new Sesame Street episodes per year, up from the 18 it produces now. Sesame Workshop will also create a spinoff series based on the Sesame Street Muppets and a new educational series for children.

Under the deal, after nine months of programming exclusively on HBO, the shows will be available free on PBS. Sesame Street will also continue its run on PBS this fall, with the season featuring a selection of episodes from the last several seasons.

The partnership with HBO comes at a time of declining licensing revenue for Sesame Workshop. Historically, less than 10 percent of the funding for Sesame Street episodes came from PBS, with the rest financed through licensing revenue, such as DVD sales.

The deal also comes as Amazon, Netflix, and other online outlets are investing resources into acquiring and developing original children’s series. The Sesame Street episodes available on Amazon and Netflix will no longer be on those outlets because of the HBO deal.

COMMENTARY: Winter Is Coming with New Game of Thrones Products

As an avid reader of George R.R. Martin’s book series and a regular viewer of the HBO TV series, I could not have been more excited to receive HBO’s announcements of their Game of Thrones-licensed products that were debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego. New figures, books, puzzles, plush and more are sure to delight Game of Thrones fans and collectors. The new products feature favorite characters as well as cuddly versions of even the prickliest of Westeros’ creatures. (There are probably some spoilers from the series, so proceed with caution.)
