Snapchat, Facebook Fueling AR Growth

TeMarketerVRARhis year, 40 million Americans will engage with some form of augmented reality (AR) monthly, up 30.2 percent over last year, according to eMarketer’s first forecast on AR and virtual reality (VR). Snapchat Lenses and Facebook and Instagram Stories are fueling much of this growth, while VR usage is driven by 360-degree videos on social networks.

eMarketer defines AR users as individuals of any age who engage with augmented reality content at least once a month using any device. This year, 12.3 percent of the U.S. population will engage with some form of AR content monthly. Mercury Inpress Debuts Augmented Reality Book Series

August22.MercuryMercury Inpress has debuted a new augmented reality book brand, Incredebooks. The first book series to debut is Funny Fables, based on popular and iconic children’s fairy tales. In addition, the company has secured a licensing agreement with Mind Candy to create next-generation coloring activity books for its Moshi Monsters brand to also use augmented technology, to debut throughout North America in the third quarter.

Each of the Incredebooks augmented reality books will focus on colors, shapes, words, and numbers. Incredebooks features interactive activities related to each storyline that help kids learn through a hands-on experience. The series marks the first release of augmented reality storybooks at mass-market retail and is available at Walmart stores in Canada. Mercury Inpress will debut a second release in the fourth quarter, also in Canada, followed by rollouts throughout the U.S. Mexico, and Latin America next year.

Discovery Communications, Fuzzy Frog Launch Augmented Reality Game

March19.SpiderAppDiscovery Communications, in partnership with app developer Fuzzy Frog, has created Real Scary Spiders, a game that allows users to interact with a pet spider through an augmented reality experience on an app. Players can collect, nurture, and raise spiders, and will eventually unlock new breeds and learn interesting facts through gameplay.

Users can transport their spiders onto a target image in the real world, such as the cover of a magazine or wall, which uses the app’s augmented reality feature. In addition, players can purchase the Animal Planet Web Blasting Tarantula exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide to activate an additional interconnected experience within the app.

The Animal Planet Real Scary Spiders app is available for free across all iOS and Android digital devices.
